The Different Between Coaching, Counseling, and Mentoring
While coaching is not a new concept, it is often confused with other supportive services like therapy, counseling, and mentoring. Therapy and counseling are conducted by licensed professionals who delve into a person’s past experiences and behaviors to improve their current mental and emotional state. Mentoring, on the other hand, is a formal relationship where a more experienced person (mentor) shares their knowledge and experiences to guide a less experienced person (mentee), typically on a professional basis.
Coaching is distinct from counseling and mentoring. It is not about providing therapy or advice. Instead, coaching helps individuals improve their current situation and create a better future by helping them envision their goals, set actionable steps, and hold themselves accountable to achieve those goals.
A Good Analogy for Coaching
I asked ChatGPT to provide an analogy for coaching, and here’s what it came up with:
Coaching is like “a lighthouse guiding a ship through rough waters.” Just as a lighthouse provides direction and helps ships navigate through storms and darkness, a coach offers guidance, support, and clarity, helping clients steer through life’s challenges and reach their destination safely and successfully. The coach doesn’t steer the ship but ensures it stays on course, empowering the client to make the journey with confidence.
How I Coach
Like the analogy suggests, I see myself as a lighthouse for my coaching clients. I don’t steer the ship for you, but I do provide guidance, support, clarity—and I’m a pretty good cheerleader too! The first session with me is free, giving you a safe space to discuss your goals, learn about the coaching process, and see if we’re a good fit.
In our second session, we’ll dive into your wellness vision, and I’ll guide you through an exercise to help you discover this vision. We’ll then set some initial goals by looking at each element of your health—your mind (how you think and talk to yourself), your environments (where you live, work, and spend most of your time), your nutrition, and your fitness. Together, we’ll set goals that will help you feel better about your current situation and start building a path toward your ultimate vision.
In each session after that, we’ll review your goals, check in on your progress, and hold you accountable for the commitments you’ve made.
