Unpacking from a Trip Right Away: Is It Psychotic?

After my sister and I got back from a long cruise, we unloaded the car, and I immediately got to work unpacking my bags. My sister, watching me in disbelief, dramatically exclaimed, “What the hell are you doing??” I was genuinely confused. I asked what she meant, and she told me that only psychopaths unpack from trips right away.

This threw me off a bit. I wasn’t always this way. There was a time when it would take me weeks to unpack after a trip. But ever since I started embracing a minimalist lifestyle, where I own significantly fewer things, unpacking right away has become second nature. It’s necessary for me to get back into the flow of my daily routines and make sure I have clean clothes ready to go.

This interaction with my sister got me thinking: Is unpacking from a trip right away considered weird? Or is it just one of those habits that varies from person to person?

Why Unpack Right Away?

1. Procrastination Is the Real Enemy The longer you let those bags sit, the more daunting the task seems. Sure, you might toss your suitcase in the corner and think it’s “out of sight, out of mind.” But the truth is, it lingers. Your brain still registers it as unfinished business, and it can gnaw at you until it’s done. Unpacking right away gives you peace of mind and helps you avoid that nagging feeling.

2. Proper Relaxation Let’s face it: a trip, especially a long one, is exhausting. But if you unpack immediately, you can properly relax after everything is settled. There’s no looming chore in the back of your mind. Instead of delaying the inevitable, I’ve found that getting it out of the way right off the bat makes winding down much more enjoyable.

3. Transitioning Back to Routine Unpacking quickly helps me mentally and physically transition back into my regular routine. By putting everything away, I feel like I’m officially home again, ready to get back into the groove of my everyday life. It’s a small ritual that signals the end of the trip and the start of my usual schedule.

Why Not Unpacking Right Away?

1. Bed Bug Caution One legitimate reason to hold off on unpacking is the dreaded possibility of bed bugs. Some people recommend leaving your suitcase in a garage or laundry room for a day or two, just in case any unwanted visitors hitched a ride home with you. In this case, taking your time with unpacking might be a smart move to protect your home.

2. Mourning the End of the Trip For some people, unpacking right away means officially accepting that the trip is over. There’s a certain sadness in that final act, as if putting away your luggage closes the door on the fun and adventure you just had. By delaying the process, maybe you get to hold onto those vacation vibes just a little longer.

So, What Do You Think?

Is unpacking from a trip right away a sign of efficiency or, as my sister thinks, a bit psychotic? Does it make sense to get it over with, or is there something to be said for letting the bags sit for a while?

Let me know: are you team “unpack right away” or team “leave it in the corner for a week”?
